Athena is the daughter of Zeus and Metis. After Zeus slept with Metis, he swallowed her to keep her from giving birth to a child. Zeus was worried his offspring would one day turn against him. Metis gave birth to Athena while trapped inside of Zeus. As Athena grew, Zeus began to suffer from a terrible headache. He asked Hephaestus to cut his head open to relieve the pain. When he did, Athena came out of Zeus' head, garbed in armor. Her appearance was so striking that the gods all stopped to admire her.
