Top 5 Reasons to Choose a Midwife
- January 25, 2023
- Blog, Featured
At CHOICES, we apply the midwifery model of care in all that we do.Midwifery is collaborative care. It is a partnership. It is a continuous and compassionate working relationship with our patients, centered around individuality, diversity, and human dignity. Midwifery is supportive, nurturing, and non-judgemental.
Some people choose midwives as their care provider in pregnancy and childbirth because midwifery care is strongly associated with lower interventions during pregnancy and birth, cost-effectiveness, and improved outcomes for both the birthing patient and the baby.
It can be hard to know what’s right for you, especially if you are a first-time parent, so we’ve compiled a handy list of thetop5reasons to hire a midwife!
1. Patient-Centered Care
Midwifery is people-centered and based in informed choice, which means taking the time to teach people about their bodies using evidence-based information and offering the options available so that a person can make an informed decision about what isbestfor THEM.
Working with a midwife during your pregnancy offers a more individualized approach to childbirth and prenatal care. Instead of routine, periodic check-ups, midwives are there to guide you throughout the entirety of your pregnancy.
2. Natural Approach to Pregnancy
Your midwife trusts and respects YOUR body’s natural capabilities, and will continuously encourage you to do the same throughout your labor and birth. They are there to provide you with information, encouragement, and emotional support, as well as to monitor progress and suggest strategies to help during labor, monitor the baby’s heartbeat and vital signs, and help with pain management.
3. Non-Invasive
Did you know that midwifery care is statistically more likely to coincide with a positive birth experience? The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, & Medicine states, “low-risk parents choosing home or birth center birth have lower rates of intervention, including cesarean birth, operative vagin*l delivery, induction of labor, augmentation of labor, and episiotomy, and lower rates of intervention-related maternal morbidity, such as infection, postpartum hemorrhage, and genital tract tearing among low-risk women compared with women choosing hospital birth.”
4. Family-Oriented
From day one, your midwife will work collaboratively with you and your family to make sure that your unique physical, emotional, and environmental needs are met every step of the way. Many midwives will allow those attending your birth to take part in the experience at your request.
5. Continuity of Care
Midwives are generally by your side from before the onset of active labour until well after your birth. Your midwife will provide you with guidance on how to care for your baby, and be there to answer any questions or concerns you have by phone between visits. They provide breastfeeding support, emotional support, and can recommend other support resources as needed. Even when your baby is a year old, there is still a relationship between the midwife and the patient and child!
