The Duolingo shop’s undergone a bit of a revamp recently — and one of the new goodies to appear is the Perfect Lesson Boost.

When used correctly, this little power-up can add a stack of XP to your daily totals.

But it comes at a price…

Is it really worth it?

Firstly, what is a boost?

In Duolingo, a boost is usually an XP multiplier.

XP, as I’m sure you’re aware, is one of the main currencies in Duolingo. It’s supposed to be a measure of how experienced you are in your languages.

In reality, however, it’s just something Duolingo use to rank you in your weekly leagues. The more XP you earn, the higher you’re likely to finish in the leaderboards.

Boosts do exactly what they say on the tin: they ‘boost’ the amount of XP you earn in a lesson.

The classic boost is the XP Boost, which doubles the amount of XP you earn. So if you earn 10 XP in a lesson, your XP Boost will double it to 20 XP.

A Perfect Lesson Boost, like an XP Boost, increases the amount of XP you can earn in a lesson.

It usually lasts for 15 minutes and gives you the opportunity to earn an extra 10 XP in your lessons.

However, as you’ve probably guessed, this is dependent on you completing the lesson perfectly — so no mistakes allowed!

You can also stack the Perfect Lesson Boost with other boosts and multipliers, so you can earn it alongside your usual combo bonus and XP Boosts as well.

By itself, 10 XP probably doesn’t seem like that much. But when used with an XP Boost, this doubles to 20 XP. Needless to say, over the course of 15 minutes, you can use this to rack up a lot of XP!

The easiest (and I think only…) way to get a Perfect Lesson Boost is through the shop.

Simply head over to the storefront and scroll down to the power-ups section.

As of June 2022, Perfect Lesson Boosts will set you back 100 gems and last for a total of 15 minutes.

Like with XP Boosts, the timer doesn’t stop between lessons — so once you activate it, you’ve got to use it in those 15 minutes.

Perfect Lesson Boosts and XP Boosts are similar in that they’re both XP multipliers, but they both work in pretty different ways:

• Boost depends on making no mistakes
• Fixed 10 XP (may be 20 XP for some users)

xp boost

• Earn by doing lessons, earning crowns, completing challenges
• Guaranteed boost at the end of each lesson
• Doubles your total XP – can earn you as much as an extra 50 XP

As you can see, the main differences involve how much XP you can earn, the way in which they boost your XP, and how you earn them.

Questions like this are always subjective — and always involve the word ‘depends’.

If you’re a free member and you care more about learning your language than the game and the leagues, then you’re better off saving your gems for heart refills. 100 gems is pretty steep for something that only lasts 15 minutes and has no effect on the quality of your lessons.

Alternatively, if you’re a league nut and desperate to finish as high up the rankings as possible, then you’ll probably get a lot out of a Perfect Lesson Boost.

When used strategically, you could definitely bag yourself an extra 100 XP in those 15 minutes, which could be the difference between winning your league or not.

Fall into the second category? Then read on, as these tips will help you get the most out of your Perfect Lesson Boost!

If you’re flying through your course and you’re rarely making mistakes, then you’re probably in a position to get the most out of a Perfect Lesson Boost.

Because remember: you only get the boost if you complete a lesson perfectly. There’s no room for error. Just one little mistake will stop you from getting your boost.

So only buy one if you’re confident. Gems don’t grow on trees, guys. You want to make sure you’re getting the maximum for your outlay.

The easiest way to avoid mistakes is to only attempt skills you’re comfortable with when your boost is active.

Earlier skills are always the easiest, so it’s probably worth spending your 15 minutes there as opposed to the harder skills further down the tree.

The lessons in the earlier skills will also be quicker to complete as the questions will be much shorter. Generally, the later skills have super long questions — it’s not unusual to find yourself spending upwards of 10 minutes on these sometimes!

Now, of course, if progress in your language is your goal then this isn’t going to help much. Spamming the easy lessons is going to do absolutely nothing for your proficiency.

However, if you want to get as much XP as possible, then this is definitely the smartest way to get the most out of your boost.

Whenever possible, always try to use your Perfect Lesson Boost with an XP Boost.

Wait until you have an XP Boost active before buying a Perfect Lesson Boost, then dive into your lessons and use them together.

With an XP Boost active, the standard 10 XP becomes 20 XP at the end of the lesson. So using the two boosts together is an absolute no-brainer if you want to maximise your XP.

Last but not least, make sure you can commit to a full 15 minutes.

There’s not really much point in forking out 100 gems on a Perfect Lesson Boost if you can only squeeze in one lesson.

Make sure you get your money’s worth.

I think these will be a big hit with the ultra-competitive types.

Some of the scores in the Diamond league are pretty ridiculous at the moment. So I’m not sure whether these will help close the gap, or just make the scores even crazier.
